I am here to talk about some business myths that some really talented entrepreneurs keep believing that are keeping us broke! These myths keep us in the mindset that growth and making the gains that we want are not possible. You may identify with one or more of these myths, and if so, I can help!
1. The Mother Teresa Myth.
This is the belief that we do what we do because we have the passion and desire to help people, heal people, and empower people, so in order to do that, we need to be like Mother Teresa. We need to make the ultimate sacrifice, go through our own pain, and give everything we have to make that impact. This is the first of many myths that reinforce the belief that we have to suffer to help others and make a a true impact.
2. The Accessibility Equals Discounted Price Myth.
I’ve worked with some powerful boss babes who have a vision, but are always going and going and traveling around. I always advise these women that if they could charge a higher price, they wouldn’t have to be running around so much. This happens when you have a great passion to make a great impact, and in order to reach the greatest number of people with that product, that you need to charge an at market price. A price that everyone can afford is a “Walmart" price, and when you start that, it is difficult to break out of it. This is tricky because it really blocks you from creating enough income to support your business. When you’re able to create a package that gives you a range of prices, you’ll be able to push past this myth. If you have several different price points, like a VIP price point, a mid-level price point, and, finally, an at market price point, you’ll be able to increase accessibility without compromising the income you deserve.
3. The Blood, Sweat, and Tears Myth.
We hear this expression a lot, and even I used it without really understanding what it meant. If you think about it, actual blood, sweat, and tears? We shouldn’t want pain in order for our business to be successful. The myth says that we will not succeed if we don’t struggle and have difficulties along the way. The belief that in order to be successful, things need to be difficult, is a myth. What if it were easy? Fun? Joyful? Painless? Natural? Flowing? Magical? I don’t want to bleed over my business! I don’t know about you, but it shouldn’t cause that kind of pain.
4. The Rabbit and Tortoise Myth.
We’ve all heard the expression— slow and steady wins the race. This myth is believing that anything that is fast growing or fast progress is not sustainable. Anything fast is not responsible or smart, so we should pull ourselves back to our slower and steadier growth. It actually contributes to you playing small, because instead of working toward growth and movement, we keep pumping the breaks and keep trying to slow it down. What if you could reach that fast growth? When you feel aligned with your purpose, your energy, your mission, and strategy, and the action steps are in front of you, so you don’t need to pump the breaks. When things are aligned, you have to take action and things are going to take off! But often we feel like it isn’t the “smart” decision, and we miss out on the opportunity for growth.
5. The Expert and Mastery Myth.
If I could just get one more certification, take one more course, could learn from another expert, it’s the feeling that you have to reach a certain point of mastery, and then you’ll be able to charge what you’re worth. It’s the feeling that you need to constantly strive for external approval and qualification in order to expand your business. This myth is a result of a lack of self confidence and alignment, so we keep seeking some external sign to expand our business.
I also got some other suggestions from different boss babes about things they’ve noticed. The main myth they referenced was what they called The Process Myth. This is the belief that there’s one process or methodology that you have to follow, and that’s the only way that you can create the success that another person is experiencing. Related to the process myth is the belief that things have to be linear. This means that you cannot go forward when the universe presents Step D, because you have to complete Step A, B, and C first. Things don’t happen in a linear form! Our minds like to think in linear terms because time is linear, so it helps us feel comforted, but that’s false. One of my favorite oracle cards is the Spiral of Manifestation. Things happen in spirals, and not just linear spirals, but three dimensional spirals! You can go front one point to the next point with incredible success if you step away from this linear process mindset.
These are all of the myths that I’ve noticed that are keeping us broke, stuck, and keeping us from taking leaps to the next level! These are some of the myths that are holding us back from creating the businesses we desire which helps us to expand and play big in the world!
